One square foot equals 0.0929 square meters. This conversion is critical in real estate, interior design, and construction. US and Canadian property is typically listed in square feet, while most other countries use square meters.
How to Convert Square Feet to Square Meters
Multiply square feet by 0.092903 to get square meters, or divide by 10.7639. The reason the number is not simply 0.3048 is that area conversions square the linear factor: one foot is 0.3048 meters, and 0.3048 squared is 0.092903. Forgetting to square the factor is the single most common mistake in area conversion and produces an answer roughly three times too large. For a quick estimate, divide square feet by 10 and subtract about 7 percent.
Measuring a Room Correctly
For a rectangular room, multiply length by width in the same unit and you have the area. A room that is 12 feet by 14 feet is 168 square feet, or 15.6 square meters. For L-shaped rooms, split the floor into rectangles, calculate each separately, and add them. For a circular area use pi times the radius squared. Always measure at floor level rather than at waist height, since skirting boards, bay windows, and sloping walls change the usable figure.
Real Estate Listings and What Counts
Countries disagree on what floor area actually includes. American listings usually quote gross living area, which counts finished heated space measured to the exterior wall but excludes garages and unfinished basements. Many European listings quote usable floor area measured inside the walls, which is a smaller number for the same building. British listings often include a total that counts hallways and stair landings. When you compare a 2,000 square foot American home against a 150 square meter European one, you are frequently comparing two different definitions, not two different sizes.
Flooring, Paint and Material Estimates
Convert first, then order. Flooring is sold by the square meter in most of the world and by the square foot in North America, and buying the wrong unit is an expensive error. Add 10 percent to your calculated area for straight-lay flooring waste and 15 percent for diagonal or herringbone patterns. Tile boxes state coverage per box, so divide your total area by the box coverage and round up. Paint coverage is usually quoted per litre per coat, typically 10 to 12 square meters, and you will almost always want two coats.
Useful Reference Sizes
A single car parking space is about 14 square meters or 150 square feet. A typical American one-bedroom apartment runs 700 to 800 square feet, or 65 to 75 square meters. A tennis court is 261 square meters. A football pitch is roughly 7,140 square meters. Holding two or three of these in mind makes it much easier to sanity-check a converted figure before you rely on it.
Understanding the square feet ↔ square meters
Area conversions square the length factor, so the numbers move faster than people expect. One foot is 0.3048 m, but one square foot is only 0.0929 square metres. That squaring is also why a 10 percent measuring error in each dimension becomes a 21 percent error in area.
