Optimal TV Mounting Height
The center of the TV should be at or slightly above your seated eye level. For a typical sofa, seated eye level is about 42 inches from the floor. For higher seating like bar stools, it's about 48 inches. Mounting too high causes neck strain during extended viewing.
Above Fireplace Mounting
While popular, mounting a TV above a fireplace is generally too high for comfortable viewing. If you must, use a tilting mount angled downward. The ideal center height is 42–48 inches, not the 55–65 inches typical of fireplace mounting.
Understanding the tv mounting height
The usual advice to hang a television at 42 inches to the centre comes from commercial showrooms, not living rooms. The comfortable height is the one that puts the middle of the screen at seated eye level, which depends on your seat height and your torso. Mount too high and you tilt your neck back for hours, which is the most common complaint after a wall mount install.
Worked examples
Mount height for a 65 inch TV with a 20 inch sofa seat
- 1Seated eye level is roughly seat height plus 24 to 26 inches: 20 + 25 = 45 inches.
- 2Screen centre should sit at eye level, so centre height is 45 inches.
- 3A 65 inch 16:9 screen is about 32 inches tall, so half is 16 inches.
- 4Bottom of the screen: 45 - 16 = 29 inches. Top of the screen: 45 + 16 = 61 inches.

Finding the bracket hole position
- 1Measure from the top of the TV down to the upper mounting hole, for example 9 inches.
- 2Top of the screen is at 61 inches from the earlier example.
- 3Bracket hole height = 61 - 9 = 52 inches.
- 4Mark that height on the stud centre and check level before drilling.
Drill the upper bracket holes at 52 inches from the floor.

Screen height assumes a 16:9 panel. Add about an inch for the bezel on older sets.
Practical tips
- •Sit on the actual sofa and have someone hold a strip of tape at the proposed centre line before drilling.
- •Above a fireplace, use a pull-down or tilting mount. A fixed mount at that height causes neck strain and washed out colour on most LCD panels.
- •Mount into studs. Drywall anchors are not rated for the leverage of a large screen on an articulating arm.
