Does 4K really let me sit closer?

Yes. At 1080p, sitting closer than about 1.6 times the diagonal makes individual pixels visible. At 4K that threshold drops to about 0.8 times the diagonal, so the same room can comfortably take a larger screen.

How high should the TV be mounted?

Aim for the centre of the screen at seated eye level, which is typically 105 to 115 cm from the floor. Mounting above a fireplace usually puts the screen too high and causes neck strain and colour shift on LCD panels.

Does the recommendation change for gaming?

Gamers often prefer a slightly wider field of view for immersion but need to read on-screen text, so 30 to 40 degrees is a good compromise. For a desk monitor at under a metre, screen sizes above 32 inches force uncomfortable head movement.

TV Viewing Distance Guidelines

The optimal viewing distance depends on TV size and resolution. For 4K TVs, the recommended distance is 1 to 1.5 times the screen diagonal. For 1080p TVs, it's 1.5 to 2.5 times. Sitting too close can cause eye strain, while sitting too far reduces the immersive experience.

THX and SMPTE Recommendations

THX recommends a 36° viewing angle (about 1.2× screen size for 4K). SMPTE recommends 30° (about 1.6× screen size). These standards ensure you can see detail without head movement.
