Final Exam Calculator
What do I need on my final?
Quick Facts
- •Most finals are worth 20–40% of total grade
- •A score over 100% needed = not achievable
- •A negative score needed = you already passed
How the Final Exam Calculator Works
This calculator uses the formula: Required Score = (Desired Grade − Current Grade × (1 − Final Weight)) / Final Weight. It tells you exactly what score you need on your final exam to achieve your target grade, given your current grade and the exam's weight in the course.
When Is It Impossible?
If the required score exceeds 100%, you mathematically cannot reach your desired grade through the final exam alone. In this case, check if extra credit is available or adjust your target grade. If the required score is negative, you've already secured your desired grade regardless of the final.
Understanding the final exam calculator
The question before a final is not what grade you have, it is what score you still need. The algebra is short: subtract your weighted current grade from the target, then divide by the weight of the final. The result is often above 100, which is a useful early signal that the target is out of reach and a different goal is worth setting.
Worked examples
Score needed for a B when the final is worth 30 percent
- 1Current grade 84 percent, target 80 percent, final weight 0.30.
- 2Points already locked in: 84 × 0.70 = 58.8.
- 3Points still needed: 80 - 58.8 = 21.2.
- 4Divide by the weight of the final: 21.2 ÷ 0.30 = 70.7.
A 71 on the final holds an 80 percent course grade.
When an A is no longer possible
- 1Current grade 78 percent, target 90 percent, final weight 0.25.
- 2Locked in: 78 × 0.75 = 58.5.
- 3Needed: 90 - 58.5 = 31.5.
- 431.5 ÷ 0.25 = 126 percent.
126 is above the maximum, so an A is unreachable without extra credit. An 85 percent target needs 106, also out of reach, while a B at 80 needs 86.
Needed final score at a 20 percent exam weight
Read across from your current grade to the course grade you want.
| Current | Target 70 | Target 80 | Target 90 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 95 | 0 | 20 | 70 |
| 90 | 0 | 40 | 90 |
| 85 | 10 | 60 | 110 |
| 80 | 30 | 80 | 130 |
| 75 | 50 | 100 | 150 |
| 70 | 70 | 120 | 170 |
Values above 100 mean the target cannot be reached with the exam alone.
Practical tips
- •Confirm whether the final is cumulative and whether it can replace a lower midterm. Replacement policies change the arithmetic completely.
- •Check for a minimum exam score requirement. Some courses fail students who pass on points but miss an exam floor.
- •Work out the score for the grade below your target too. Knowing the safe number lowers exam stress.
