How do dropped scores change the calculation?

Remove the dropped item, then recompute the category average over the remaining items. The category weight stays the same, only the average inside it changes.

What if my weights do not total 100 percent?

Divide your weighted total by the sum of the weights you actually have. That is the same method used for a partially graded course and keeps the result on a 0 to 100 scale.

Does extra credit go inside a category or on top?

It depends on the syllabus. Points added inside a category raise that category average, while points added to the final grade are applied after weighting and have a larger effect.

Why is my learning platform grade different from mine?

How Grade Calculators Work

A weighted grade calculator multiplies each assignment's score by its weight (percentage of the total grade), then sums the results. For example, if homework is 30% and you scored 90%, and exams are 70% and you scored 80%, your weighted grade is (0.3 × 90) + (0.7 × 80) = 83%.

Understanding the grade calculator

Most courses weight categories differently, so a raw average of your scores is misleading. A 95 on a quiz worth 10 percent moves your grade far less than an 85 on a final worth 40 percent. A weighted grade multiplies each category percentage by its weight and adds the results, which is exactly how the registrar computes the number on your transcript.

Worked examples

Weighted grade across four categories

3Midterm 78 percent at weight 0.25: 78 × 0.25 = 19.5.

A course grade of 85.5 percent, which is a B in most scales.

Grading when a category is incomplete

2Earned points so far: 13.8 + 17.0 = 30.8.
3Current standing = earned ÷ completed weight: 30.8 ÷ 0.35 = 88.0 percent.

88 percent so far, which is the honest figure until the remaining 65 percent is graded.
