US GPA Scale Explained
The 4.0 GPA scale is the most common grading system in US colleges and universities. An A equals 4.0, B equals 3.0, C equals 2.0, D equals 1.0, and F equals 0. Plus and minus modifiers adjust by ±0.3. Some schools use a 5.0 scale for honors/AP courses.
International Grade Conversions
Different countries use different grading scales. UK uses First/2:1/2:2/Third, Germany uses 1.0–5.0 (lower is better), India uses percentage-based systems. This converter focuses on the US 4.0 scale, letter grades, and percentages.
Understanding the gpa converter
GPA conversion is not standard across institutions, which is why the same transcript can be read differently by two universities. The common United States scale assigns 4.0 to an A, and most conversions from a percentage or from an international scale go through a letter grade first. Weighted GPAs add points for honours and advanced courses and can exceed 4.0.
Worked examples
Unweighted GPA for five courses
- 1Convert each letter to points: A = 4.0, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, A- = 3.7, C+ = 2.3.
- 2Multiply each by credit hours: 4.0×3, 3.3×3, 3.0×4, 3.7×3, 2.3×3 gives 12.0, 9.9, 12.0, 11.1, 6.9.
- 3Add the quality points: 51.9. Add the credits: 16.
- 4Divide: 51.9 ÷ 16 = 3.24.
A GPA of 3.24 on the 4.0 scale.
Weighted GPA with two AP courses
- 1Standard courses keep their normal points, AP courses add 1.0.
- 2Grades: A in AP (5.0), B in AP (4.0), A in regular (4.0), B in regular (3.0), C in regular (2.0).
- 3Sum: 5.0 + 4.0 + 4.0 + 3.0 + 2.0 = 18.0 across 5 courses.
- 418.0 ÷ 5 = 3.60 weighted, against 3.20 unweighted.
