Tipping Guide
In the United States, standard tipping at restaurants is 15–20% of the pre-tax bill. For exceptional service, 25% or more is common. Other countries have different customs — tipping is not expected in Japan, while in Europe rounding up or adding 5–10% is typical.
How to Calculate Tips
For a quick 20% tip: move the decimal point one place left (that gives 10%), then double it. For 15%: calculate 10% and add half of that. This calculator handles the math instantly and can split the bill among multiple people.

Tipping is a social convention, not a formula, and the expected percentage changes with the country, the service, and whether a service charge already appears on the bill. This page gives the arithmetic plus the norms that decide what number to use in the first place.
Worked examples
20 percent tip on a 68.40 bill split three ways
- 1Tip = 68.40 × 0.20 = 13.68.
- 2Total = 68.40 + 13.68 = 82.08.
- 3Per person = 82.08 ÷ 3 = 27.36.
Each person pays 27.36, of which 4.56 is tip.
Tipping on a bill that already includes a 12.5 percent service charge
- 1Check whether the service charge is discretionary. If it is and the service was good, no extra tip is expected.
- 2If you want to round up, tip on the pre-service-charge subtotal, not the new total, to avoid tipping on a tip.
A service charge usually replaces the tip rather than adding to it.
