    • •Meta title: 50-60 characters
    • •Meta description: 155-160 characters

    Why Character Counts Matter

Social media platforms and SEO have strict character limits. Twitter/X allows 280 characters, Instagram captions max at 2,200, and Google displays 50-60 characters for title tags and 155-160 for meta descriptions. Staying within these limits ensures your content displays properly.

    Understanding the character counter

Character limits are everywhere in publishing, from a 60 character page title that Google truncates to a 280 character post. They are not all counted the same way. Some platforms count an emoji as one character, others as two, and search engines truncate by pixel width rather than character count, which is why a title full of wide letters gets cut earlier.

    Worked examples

Fitting a page title inside the search snippet

    1. 1Google typically displays about 580 pixels of title on desktop.
    2. 2That averages 55 to 60 characters in a normal mix of letters.
    3. 3A title in capitals or full of W and M characters is wider, so aim for 50.
    4. 4Put the main keyword in the first 40 characters so it survives truncation.

Target 50 to 60 characters, with the key phrase near the start.

Counting a post with a link and emoji

    1. 1The platform counts every link as 23 characters regardless of real length.
    2. 2Body text is 210 characters plus a 48 character URL.
    3. 3Effective count: 210 + 23 = 233.
    4. 4Two emoji count as 2 characters each on that platform: 233 + 4 = 237.

237 of 280 characters used, leaving room for a short call to action.
