How to Choose the Right Rug Size
The right rug size depends on your room dimensions and furniture layout. For living rooms, the most common approach is to have all furniture legs on the rug (rug should be 2 ft smaller than room in each direction). For front-legs-only, subtract 4 ft. A floating center rug should be about 6 ft smaller than the room.
Understanding the rug size calculator
The most common rug mistake is buying one that is too small, which makes a room read as cramped and leaves furniture floating. The reliable approach is to decide how much of the furniture sits on the rug: all legs on, front legs on, or all legs off. Each choice sets a minimum size for the room, and the standard retail sizes rarely land exactly where you want them.
Worked examples
Living room rug for a 12 by 15 ft room, front legs on
- 1Leave 18 inches of bare floor around the rug on each side: 12 ft - 3 ft = 9 ft, and 15 ft - 3 ft = 12 ft.
- 2That gives a maximum of 9 by 12 ft.
- 3Check the sofa is 84 inches wide, so the rug must exceed 7 ft on that side. 9 ft clears it.
- 4Position so the front legs of the sofa and both chairs sit on the rug.

Rug under a 6 seat dining table
- 1Table measures 72 by 38 inches.
- 2Chairs need 24 inches of pull-out clearance on every side: add 48 inches to each dimension.
- 372 + 48 = 120 inches, and 38 + 48 = 86 inches, so 10 ft by 7 ft 2 in.
- 4Round up to the nearest standard size.
A 8 by 10 ft rug is the practical minimum, and 9 by 12 ft is safer for a heavy chair.
