Running Pace: Min/Mile vs Min/KM Explained

Learn to convert running pace between imperial and metric, understand pace zones, and calculate your target race pace.

    What Is Running Pace

Pace is the inverse of speed. Instead of measuring how much distance you cover in a given amount of time (like miles per hour), pace measures how much time it takes you to cover a given distance. Runners generally prefer pace over speed because it directly tells them how long each mile or kilometer is taking. If you are running at a 10:00 min/mile pace, it means each mile takes you exactly 10 minutes. This makes it easy to estimate finish times for any distance.

Example: At a 10-minute mile pace, a 5-mile run takes about 50 minutes. A half marathon (13.1 miles) would take roughly 2 hours and 11 minutes.

    Converting Between Min/Mile and Min/KM

To convert a pace from minutes per mile to minutes per kilometer, divide the min/mile pace by 1.60934 (the number of kilometers in a mile). To go from min/km to min/mile, multiply by 1.60934.

    Example: 8:00 per mile / 1.609 = approximately 4:58 per km. 5:00 per km x 1.609 = approximately 8:03 per mile.
