Understanding Running Pace
Running pace is expressed as minutes per mile or minutes per kilometer. It tells you how long it takes to cover one unit of distance. Pace is the inverse of speed — a faster pace means a lower number. Most training plans and race strategies are based on pace zones.
Common Race Paces
Beginner 5K: 10–12 min/mile. Intermediate 5K: 8–10 min/mile. Sub-20 min 5K: ~6:26 min/mile. Marathon world record pace: ~4:37 min/mile (2:01:09). Knowing your pace helps set realistic race goals and training targets.
