Soccer Ball Sizes from Size 1 to Size 5
Soccer balls are manufactured in five numbered sizes. Size 1 (also called a mini ball or skills ball) has a circumference of 18 to 20 inches and is used for skill training and by very young children. Size 2 is slightly larger at 20 to 22 inches. Size 3 is the first ball used in organized youth leagues, measuring 23 to 24 inches around. Size 4 is the standard for competitive youth soccer from ages 8 to 12, with a circumference of 25 to 26 inches. Size 5 is the regulation ball for players 13 and older, including all professional leagues, with a circumference of 27 to 28 inches.
Matching Ball Size to Age and League
Most youth soccer organizations follow a consistent progression. Under-6 and under-8 players use Size 3 balls. Under-10 and under-12 players use Size 4. Players aged 13 and up, including high school, college, and professional levels, all use Size 5. Using the wrong size ball at practice or in games can slow development. A Size 5 ball is too heavy for a 7-year-old to kick properly, which leads to toe-kicking rather than striking with the instep. Conversely, an older player practicing with a Size 3 ball will not develop the strength needed to strike a regulation ball accurately over distance.
Understanding Ball Construction
Soccer balls are constructed using one of three methods. Machine-stitched balls have panels sewn together by machine and are the most affordable option. They are durable and perform well for practice and recreational play. Hand-stitched balls use thicker thread and tighter stitching, resulting in better water resistance and more consistent shape. Thermally bonded balls use heat to fuse panels together without any stitching, creating the smoothest surface and most predictable flight. The official match balls for the FIFA World Cup and the UEFA Champions League are thermally bonded.
Shin Guard Sizing and Selection
Shin guards are mandatory in all organized soccer from youth leagues through professional play. They are sized based on the player's height. Extra-small (XS) guards fit players under 3 feet 3 inches. Small (S) fits 3 feet 3 inches to 3 feet 11 inches. Medium (M) covers 3 feet 11 inches to 4 feet 11 inches. Large (L) is for 4 feet 11 inches to 5 feet 11 inches. Extra-large (XL) suits players 5 feet 11 inches and taller. The guard should cover the area from about 2 inches below the knee to just above the ankle bone.
Field Dimensions by Age Group
Soccer field sizes scale with age to keep the game proportionate and enjoyable. Under-6 games are often played on fields as small as 25 by 15 yards with no goalkeepers. Under-8 fields expand to roughly 35 by 25 yards. Under-10 fields are around 55 to 70 yards long by 35 to 45 yards wide. Under-12 fields reach 70 to 80 yards by 45 to 55 yards. Under-14 and above play on full-size fields, which FIFA regulations set between 100 and 130 yards long by 50 and 100 yards wide. Most high school and college fields are approximately 110 by 70 yards.
